What Your Saliva Reveals About Your Health
Most of us never give saliva a second thought. It is just there, quietly doing its job. But that quiet fluid turns out to be one of the most useful windows we have into how your whole body is doing. When we know more, we can do better, and saliva gives us a lot to learn from.
Saliva does more than you think
Saliva is working for you all day long. It helps you taste and swallow, it begins digestion, and it washes over your teeth and gums to protect them. It also carries information. The makeup of your saliva can reflect what is happening well beyond your mouth, which is why we pay close attention to it as part of caring for your whole chewing system.
Two simple things we like to measure
During your visit, we can check a couple of things in your saliva that tell us a surprising amount.
- pH, the balance between acidic and alkaline. When saliva runs too acidic for too long, it creates an environment where enamel can soften and unwelcome bacteria can thrive. Knowing your pH helps us understand your risk and gives us a clear, fixable place to start.
- Nitric oxide levels. Nitric oxide is a small molecule with a big job. It helps blood vessels relax and supports healthy circulation throughout your body. Checking it gives us a clue about how well that system is working, and it opens up a bigger conversation about your overall wellness, not just your teeth.
Both of these are quick, comfortable, and genuinely informative. They turn guesswork into something we can actually see together.
Why this matters to you
It is my belief that dentistry should be a partnership, and good information is what makes that partnership work. When we can show you what your saliva reveals, you are no longer wondering in the dark. You can see why your mouth behaves the way it does, and you can make choices that move you toward feeling better.
This is also where we get to look for the why. If your pH is low or your nitric oxide is not where we would like it, that is not a verdict, it is a starting point. Everyone is unique, so what we find for you becomes the foundation of a plan built around your life and your goals.
A small test, a fuller picture
What I love about saliva screening is how much it offers for how simple it is. It reflects the connection between your mouth and the rest of you, and it helps us care for you as a whole person rather than one tooth at a time.
My hope for you is that you leave each visit knowing a little more about your own health than when you walked in. If you are curious about what your saliva might reveal, we would be glad to show you. It is a small step that can tell us a great deal about how to help you thrive.
